N.C. Department of Transportation Chief Deputy Secretary Nick Tennyson will join law enforcement and other local officials at a dedication ceremony to honor fallen Rutherford County Sherriff’s deputies Capt. Roy Huskey and Sgt. Owen Messersmith. The bridge along U.S. 74 over Oakland Road will be dedicated as theCaptain Roy Huskey Bridge, and the bridge along U.S. 74 at Bethany Church Road will be dedicated as theSergeant Owen Messersmith Bridge.  

Both officers were killed in the line of duty on May 31, 1979. The bridge dedications were requested by the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners, and approved by the N.C. Board of Transportation on Jan. 9, 2014.
