SHELBY -- On Tuesday, June 3, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin a bridge replacement project on Locust Grove Road, which will be closed to traffic while construction is ongoing.
A detour will be in place during the bridge replacement project. Motorists will be directed to use McMinn Road, North Clear Creek Road and Stepp Road to get around the construction. The road is expected to remain closed until early October.
The existing bridge on Locust Grove Road over Featherstone Creek was built in 1963 and is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means that although the bridge is safe for the traveling public, it was built to outdated design standards and requires significant maintenance to remain functional.
NHM Constructors of Asheville was awarded the $383,954 contract for the project.
