SHELBY -- On Tuesday, May 27, weather permitting, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin replacing the bridge on N.C. 108 over Mountain Creek west of Rutherfordton. During construction, N.C. 108 will be closed to through traffic between Union Road and Pleasant Hill Road, and a detour will be in place to help motorists navigate the closure.
Motorists traveling on N.C. 108 from Rutherfordton will turn left onto Union Road and continue to the intersection of Union Road and Pleasant Hill Road before turning right onto Pleasant Hill Road. Then, motorists will follow Pleasant Hill Road to return to N.C. 108. Motorists traveling on N.C. 108 toward Rutherfordton should reverse the detour route.
The detour will be in place through the end of October.
The existing bridge was built in 1926 and is considered functionally obsolete. This means that although the bridge is safe for the traveling public, it was built to design standards no longer in use.
This project is one of 11 bridge replacement projects that are part of a $7.6 million contract.
