North Carolina Celebrates National Train Day Saturday, May 10 Wednesday, May 07, 2014

RALEIGH – Communities across North Carolina will celebrate the importance of trains during Amtrak’s seventh annual National Train Day on Saturday, May 10. The events are free and open to the public.

“The bottom line is, trains are cool, and we have a thriving rail system that we want to share with the public,” said N.C. Department of Transportation Rail Division Director Paul Worley. “We invite all North Carolinians to check out these local events to learn more about trains and celebrate this essential form of transportation.”

People can join the celebration by visiting open houses at train stations along the rail corridor including Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Burlington, High Point, Greensboro, Salisbury, Kannapolis, Charlotte, Selma, Wilson and Rocky Mount. The celebrations will feature train-themed games, activities, model railroad displays, music, refreshments and a chance to win train tickets.   There will also be a Free Shuttle transfer from the Salisbury Station to the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer.

A special fare will be offered for children on National Train Day. Kids ages 2 – 12 can ride for $5 one way to and from any North Carolina destination on the Piedmont and Carolinian trains and NC Thruway Services. This offer is only valid for travel on May 10. Terms and conditions apply. Passengers can book at now through May 10 or purchase their tickets at any Amtrak Quik-Trak machine or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL. Use Promo Code V852.

The celebrations in North Carolina will be among nearly 300 events in all 50 states celebrating why Trains Matter.

Details on National Train Day events are available at Additional events and information will be added to the website frequently.  In addition, rail passengers and enthusiasts are invited to share why trains matter to them via @NCDOT_Rail, @natltrainday or Facebook.
