NCDOT to Begin Bridge Rehabilitation Project in Surry County Tuesday, April 01, 2014

SHELBY  – On Monday, April 7, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin rehabilitating a bridge on Dodson Mill Road over U.S. 52 in Surry County. The bottom of the existing bridge has been struck by trucks several times and this rehabilitation work should prevent those issues from recurring.

Crews will be repairing the bridge’s substructure as part of the rehabilitation. The old bridge deck will be removed, one half at a time, and then the elevation of the new bridge deck will be raised for an additional 18 inches of clearance for traffic on U.S. 52.

Traffic will be maintained on the bridge using a temporary traffic signal, but there will be times during construction when an off-site detour is necessary. Detour signs will be in place to help motorists navigate the closure.

R.E. Burns and Sons Company, Inc. of Statesville was awarded the $1,193,556 contract for the project in September.
