SHELBY – Beginning Tuesday, April 1, Harmony Grove Road
in McDowell County will be closed to replace the bridge over Thompson’s Ford
The $443,996 project includes removing the existing structure and
replacing it with a new bridge. The current bridge was built in 1958 and is
considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. That means that
although the bridge is safe, it was built to design standards no longer in
use and requires costly maintenance to remain functional.
During bridge construction, traffic will be detoured to Fairview Rd, then
to Stacy Hill Road, onto U.S. 70, and then back to Harmony Grove Road.
Miller Engineer Company, Inc. is the contractor for the project. The bridge
replacement is scheduled to be completed in late July.
