Shelby – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to replace a bridge on Big Pine Road over Big Pine Creek in Madison County.
Buckeye Bridge, LLC of Canton was awarded the $1,060,075 contract. Grading, drainage, paving and the bridge replacement are included in the project.
The existing bridge was built in 1973 and is considered structurally deficient. That means that although the bridge is safe, it requires significant maintenance and repair to remain in service, and therefore needs to be replaced.
Work on the project can begin as early as March 31, and the project should be completed by mid-November 2015.
This is one of the 17 road and bridge contracts worth $32.2 million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 8.5 percent, or almost $3 million below NCDOT estimates.
