SHELBY -- Starting Monday, March 17, crews in Burke County will begin replacing a bridge on N.C. 126 over the Linville River. Temporary signals will be installed on each end of the bridge to maintain on-site traffic during construction.
The 74-year-old bridge near Morganton is considered functionally obsolete and structurally deficient, which means that although the bridge is safe, it needs to be replaced to meet current design standards.
The bridge replacement should be finished by late 2014. The cost of the bridge replacement is $2.1 million.
The Linville River bridge replacement project is included in a contract to replace seven bridges in NCDOT's Division 13. Bridges in Buncombe, Burke, McDowell, Madison and Rutherford counties are included in the $8 million contract.
