SHELBY -- The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract for improvements to the bridge over Saconon Creek on Stepp Mill Road in Henderson County.
The project includes grading, drainage, paving, installing a retaining wall and retrofitting the existing structure, which was built in 1958.
DeVere Construction Company Inc. was awarded the $1,024,949 contract for the project.
During construction, a detour will be in place to help motorists navigate the closure. Motorists traveling on Stepp Mill Road will take Ridge Road to Oleta Road, and then turn back onto Stepp Mill Road.
Work on the project can begin as early as March 31, with all work except vegetation establishment completed by June 2015.
This is one of the 17 road and bridge contracts worth $32.2 million recently awarded by NCDOT for projects across North Carolina. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were 8.5 percent, or almost $3 million below NCDOT estimates.
