Bridge in Gates County to Close in March for Replacement Thursday, February 27, 2014

RALEIGH — Starting Monday, March 3, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the bridge on Middle Swamp Road over Duke Swamp in Gates County. The closure is necessary for crews to replace the bridge west of the Great Dismal Swamp and south of the Virginia State line. The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in June 2014.

Because of the condition of the bridge, which was constructed in 1958, NCDOT had posted a weight limit on the bridge, restricting single-axle vehicles weighing more than 18 tons and trucks weighing more than 26 tons from using the bridge. The new bridge will meet current design standards for width, shoulders and railings, and will not have a posted weight limit.

The bridge site on Middle Swamp Road will be closed during construction. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes during the closure.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
