Exum Road Bridge Closed Today for Replacement Monday, February 24, 2014

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation today closed a section of Exum Road north of Nashville in Nash County so crews with S.T. Wooten Co. of Wilson could begin replacement of the bridge over Basket Creek.

A $923,782 contract was awarded in December 2013 to S.T. Wooten Co. for the replacement of the 58-year-old bridge. The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic no later than August 15.

Due to the condition of the bridge, NCDOT posted a weight limit restricting single-axle vehicles weighing more than 26 tons and trucks weighing more than 29 tons from using the bridge. The new bridge will be built to current design standards and will not have posted weight limits.

The bridge is closed to traffic during construction with a detour in place. Motorists will use Breedlove Road and Womble Road to get around the construction site.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
