NCDOT Hosting Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Events Tuesday, February 18, 2014

RALEIGH--Women are an essential part of today's labor force, yet women are still underrepresented in the area of engineering.  According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, there are more than 60 million women in the labor force today, yet women make up only 8 percent of engineers and 18 percent of engineering technicians.

NCDOT hopes to put a dent in those figures by introducing female high school students to the world of engineering with upcoming workshops across the state. At these events, the students will be able to talk with female NCDOT engineers about their careers, get a taste for the industry with hands-on activities and learn ways to excel in engineering programs at college.
Through programs like this, NCDOT is aiming to help create a pool of women engineers in a male-dominated profession, who will utilize their skills and talents in North Carolina while promoting the diversity and credibility of women and minorities in transportation and engineering positions.

“The light went off in my head,” said one of last year’s workshop attendees. “I finally know what I want to study in college and have decided to apply for a NCDOT internship after my freshman year.”

The schedule for the upcoming series of workshops is as follows:

• Thursday, Feb. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
   Forsyth Tech Mazie Woodruff Center
   4905 Lansing Drive

• Tuesday, March 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
   Pitt Co. Agr. Auditorium
   403 Government Circle

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is part of National Engineering Week, which takes place Feb. 18 – 21, 2014. National Engineering Week celebrates the positive contributions engineers make to society and is a catalyst for outreach events across the country.
