NCDOT Awards Contract for Wilkes County Bridge Replacement Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Shelby — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to replace a bridge on Old N.C. 16 over Middle Fork Reddies River in Wilkes County.

Devere Construction Company Inc. was awarded the $972,073 contract for the project, which is expected to begin in March. During construction, a temporary one-lane detour with traffic signals will be in place for motorists traveling through the area.

The existing structure was built in 1964 and is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Although the bridge is still safe, it isn’t up-to-date on current design standards and needs to be replaced.

All work on the project except permanent vegetation establishment should be complete by mid-June 2015. The overall completion date is mid-December 2015.
