Reminder: Public Meetings Next Week for Rodanthe Bridge Alternatives on N.C. 12 Friday, January 3, 2014

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a series of public meetings along the Outer Banks next week to gather input from citizens on the long-term plans for N.C. 12 in Rodanthe on Hatteras Island in Dare County.

NCDOT is considering two bridge alternatives for the project. They include a bridge within the existing easement of N.C. 12, and a three-mile bridge that extends into the Pamlico Sound.

During the open house portion of the meetings, attendees will be able to come by at any time and talk with NCDOT personnel one-on-one about the proposed alternatives for the design-build project. The formal presentation will include an explanation of the location and design for each alternative, as well as other project information. The same information and maps will be available at all meetings. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to submit written comments and ask questions.

Maps displaying the location and design of the alternatives and a copy of the recently completed Environmental Assessment (EA) are available for public review online and at the following locations:
•    Dare County Planning and Inspections Satellite Office, 49815 N.C. 12, Buxton;
•    NCDOT Resident Engineer’s Office, 349 Waterplant Road, Unit B, Manteo;
•    Dare County Library – Manteo, 700 U.S 64/264;
•    Dare County Library – Hatteras, 57709 N.C. 12;
•    Dare County Library – Kill Devil Hills, 400 Mustian Street;
•    Fessenden Recreation Center, 46830 N.C. 12 in Buxton; and
•    Ocracoke School and Community Library, 225 Back Road, Ocracoke

NCDOT is accepting public comments on this project through Friday, Jan. 24. After the department gathers public input, a final design alternative is anticipated to be selected early this year. A contract is currently scheduled to be awarded in late spring/early summer of this year once all final documentation is approved.     

The bridge is part of a comprehensive and carefully studied plan to improve mobility along N.C. 12, which also includes replacing the Bonner Bridge.
