RALEIGH – On Dec. 23, the N.C. Department of Transportation will advertise the contract for the project to replace the Gallant’s Channel Bridge on U.S. 70 in Carteret County.
The contract will be advertised for 28 days. Bids will open on Jan. 21 and the contract could potentially be awarded in early February. The next step in the process is for NCDOT to receive a permit from the U.S. Coast Guard, who maintains navigation in Gallant’s Channel.
The project includes replacing the 56-year-old bascule bridge with a 65-foot fixed span bridge and widening U.S. 70 to four lanes with a median on a new location from Radio Island to just north of Olga Road.
The primary purpose of the project is to increase the mobility and safety of U.S. 70 and eliminate delays due to the bridge opening.
