CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation this week will resume setting bridge beams and overhangs to convert the existing I-85/I-485 interchange in north Charlotte to a turbine interchange, the first of its kind in North Carolina. This design utilizes smaller, single-span bridges and smaller columns, and is easier to maintain.
Crews will need to close I-85 South to safely perform the work. Beginning tonight at 10 p.m., motorists will be detoured from I-85 South to I-485 (Exit 48), following an onsite detour back to I-85 South until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10. Weather permitting, the closure will continue from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.
The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2014.
