Closures are part of Independence Boulevard widening project
CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will intermittently close lanes on Independence Boulevard in both directions beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, weather permitting. The closures are part of the $51 million widening project to convert Independence Boulevard to an expressway between Sharon Amity Road and Wallace Lane. Contractor Devere Construction started construction in April, and expect to complete the project by October 2016.
Crews will be hanging girders for the future bridge carrying Conference Drive over Independence Boulevard, which requires closing the westbound lanes. Traffic will be detoured from Independence Boulevard to Harris Boulevard to Idlewild Road. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10. Crews will close the westbound lanes from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 to continue girder placement.
Work will resume from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 11 and 12. Westbound lanes on Independence Boulevard will be closed each night, and motorists will follow the same offsite detour. In addition, eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane.
Another release will detail the contractor’s schedule moving into next week.
