Bridge in Hyde County to Close in December Tuesday, November 26, 2013

RALEIGH — Starting Monday, Dec. 2, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the bridge on Higginsport Road over a canal near Rutman Creek in Hyde County. The closure is necessary for crews to replace the bridge northeast of the Pungo River. The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic by June 2014.

The replacement of this bridge, which was constructed in 1970, is part of a larger $8.9 million design-build project that includes replacing five bridges in Dare County, and five culverts and two bridges in Hyde County.

Because of the condition of the bridge, NCDOT posted a weight limit restricting single axle vehicles weighing more than 40 tons from using the bridge. The new bridge will meet current design standards and will not have posted weight limits.

During the closure, traffic on Higginsport Road will use N.C. 45/U.S. 264 to travel around the construction site. A map of the bridge location and alternate route can be found here.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
