NCDOT to Replace Price Mill Road Bridge Over Troublesome Creek in Rockingham County Thursday, November 07, 2013

RALEIGH — In an effort to decrease construction and maintenance costs, the N.C. Department of Transportation is replacing the bridge carrying Price Mill Road over Troublesome Creek near Madison with a box culvert.

To accommodate the work,  Price Mill Road will be closed near Traxler Road, beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11. Weather permitting, the road will reopen by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014.
During the closure, motorists should use Haynes Road and N.C. 65  to navigate around the work zone.

The existing steel bridge was built in 1955 and is reaching the end of its life cycle. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.  The new box culvert will accommodate all traffic, including trucks and emergency vehicles, as it will not be subject to the load restrictions of the current bridge.

This project is part of the department’s State-Funded Bridge Improvement Program to improve the overall condition of the state’s bridges. The department is investing $810 million over four years to strategically perform preservation or rehabilitation work when possible instead of just replacing bridges across the board. This approach enables NCDOT to extend the lifespan of existing bridges at a significant costs savings, stretching taxpayer dollars further and improving more bridges overall.
