NCDOT to start improvement project on N.C. 51 in Mecklenburg County next week Thursday, October 31, 2013

CHARLOTTE – Motorists will soon see improvements along N.C. 51 near Paces Avenue in Matthews as the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to mill and pave this segment of N.C. 51, install curb and gutter, lane markings and pavement markers. Weather permitting, work will get underway Monday, Nov. 4.

The project also includes installing a pipe under N.C. 51 to help alleviate problems with water ponding and freezing on the road. The installation will require closing N.C. 51 in both directions at Paces Avenue from 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, until 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18. NCDOT will post a detour for motorists from N.C. 51 to U.S. 74 to Sam Newell Road back to N.C. 51.

The work will require intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The contractor can work at night or on weekends if needed, with approval from the department.

The project is scheduled to be completed December 13.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
