Bridge Replacement in Edgecombe County to Begin Next Week Wednesday, October 30, 2013

RALEIGH — Starting Monday, Nov. 4, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin replacement of the bridge on Draughn Road over Maple Swamp, east of Whitakers in Edgecombe County.

The existing 55 year-old bridge is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This does not mean that the bridge is unsafe, rather that it requires repairs and was built to design standards no longer used for bridges.

A $585,500 contract was awarded to T.A. Loving Co. of Goldsboro for the replacement project, which is expected to be done by April 2014, weather permitting.

The bridge will be closed to through traffic with a signed detour in place.
•    Northbound through traffic will take Ebenezer Road to N.C. 33 to O’Neal Road to travel around the closure.
•    Southbound through traffic will take Maple Swamp Road to Bethlehem Church Road to travel around the closure.

Local traffic will be able to access Draughn Road, but will not be able to cross the bridge.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
