Work is part of Independence Boulevard widening project
CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation is taking another step to improve a section of Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. Beginning tonight at 8 p.m., crews will shift traffic on Sharon Amity Road to a temporary alignment between Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard. This shift is part of the department’s 1.3 mile widening project to improve mobility and safety on U.S. 74 by building a bridge taking Sharon Amity Road over Independence Boulevard.
In order to safely tie in the alignment with the existing roadway, crews will close the southbound lanes on Sharon Amity Road between Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard. In addition, the northbound right lane will be closed between Pierson Drive and Independence Boulevard so crews can pave a section of the alignment. During the closures, police will direct traffic at Independence Boulevard and Sharon Amity Road.
All lanes will open by 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22.
