DMV Offices Open and Operating Normally During Federal Government Shutdown Thursday, October 03, 2013

RALEIGH – The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles said today that all DMV offices are operational and have not been affected by the federal government shutdown. However, DMV may not be able to issue driver licenses and ID cards in cases where there has been a name change that requires a license applicant to obtain a new Social Security Administration card.

“We are seeing some customers who cannot get their licenses because they must make name changes at the SSA before they change them with us,” said DMV Commissioner Kelly Thomas. “We are sorry that the shutdown impacts our customers’ ability to do business with us, but we want to let affected customers know about this problem before they make the trip to a DMV office,” he said.

Because of the federal government shutdown, the Social Security Administration is not issuing new or replacement Social Security cards. NCDMV requires customers who are making name changes on their licenses or ID cards to first change their names with the Social Security Administration.
