N.C. 12 Facebook page honored with first place for best use of social media
RALEIGH – In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the N.C. Department of Transportation launched the N.C. 12 Facebook page to provide citizens with instant updates about damage to the critical Outer Banks lifeline and show how the department was working to repair the roadway. The effort to create the page and grow its audience over the past year earned the NCDOT Communications Office national recognition today for best use of a single social media platform.
“We’re proud of our team for leveraging new media to deliver important information directly to the nearly 10,000 people who ‘like’ our N.C. 12 Facebook page,” said NCDOT Secretary Tony Tata. “We’ve now created a virtual community where they feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts, which benefits us and them.”
Representatives from the office accepted the first place award in Grand Rapids, Mich. at TransComm 2013, the annual conference of the Transportation Communications Subcommittee of the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials. Each year, states across the country enter the TransComm Skills Contest and compete for top honors in several categories, including social media.
“This award shows that our office is committed to finding new ways to connect with the public and engage in meaningful dialogue with them,” said NCDOT Deputy Secretary for Communications Cris Mulder. “We will continue to use this popular tool to inform citizens about our efforts to replace the aging Bonner Bridge and elevate N.C. 12 onto bridges at the two breach sites north of Rodanthe.”
