Bullock School Road Bridge in Edgecombe County Closed for Replacement Wednesday, September 18, 2013

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation today closed a section of Bullock School Road south of Rocky Mount in Edgecombe County to allow crews to begin replacing the bridge over Cokey Swamp. The new bridge is expected to open to traffic by the end of the year.

The bridge will be closed to through traffic while construction is taking place. A map of the project location and detour route can be found here.

Traffic will use Green Pasture Road, Daughtridge Farm Road and Old Wilson Road to travel around the closure.

A $419,000 contract was awarded to Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh for the replacement of the 73-year-old bridge, which is classified as structurally deficient. This means that while the bridge remains safe, it requires repairs and was built to design standards no longer used for bridges.

This project is part of the department’s overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state’s bridges. Investments in our transportation infrastructure provide better access and support economic growth across the state.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
