Initial Work Begins This week on N.C. 171 Bridge Replacement in Martin County - New bridge construction to begin in early 2014 Monday, August 26, 2013

RALEIGH — Crews from the N.C. Department of Transportation and Carolina Bridge Co. Inc. of Orangeburg, S.C. are beginning a bridge replacement project this week on N.C. 171 over Hardison Mill Creek in Martin County.

The new bridge will be constructed next to the existing 63 year-old bridge located just north of the Beaufort County Line. Work starting this week includes hauling dirt and materials to and from the project site, and beginning construction of new sections of road that will lead traffic on N.C. 171 to the location of the new bridge. Construction of the new bridge will begin in early 2014.

A $1.8 million contract was awarded in June to Carolina Bridge Co. Inc. for the replacement project. The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in September 2014, with the remainder of the project, including demolition of the existing bridge and replanting of vegetation, done by February 2015. Lane closures may be in place occasionally during the project as necessary.

The existing bridge is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means that while the bridge remains safe, it requires repairs and was built to design standards no longer used for bridges. It needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.
