Motorists can access new exit ramp from I-485 Outer Loop to I-85 North
CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation tonight is preparing to open another ramp on the $92.2 million reconstruction of the I-85/I-485 interchange in north Charlotte. Weather permitting, traffic will be shifted to the new exit ramp from the I-485 Outer Loop to I-85 North (Exit 31) beginning at 9 p.m.
Contractor Lane Construction has opened several ramps this summer as part of converting the existing interchange to a turbine design, the first of its kind in North Carolina. The turbine circles all left-turning traffic around a central bridge in a counterclockwise direction.
The traffic switch should be completed by 6 a.m. Friday, August 23.
The contractor will start demolition work to the existing flyover bridge from the I-485 Outer Loop to I-85 South at 11 p.m. Friday, continuing the disassembly over five consecutive nights. Work will be scheduled from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Wednesday, August 28. An offsite detour will be posted for motorists from I-85 North to the I-485 Inner Loop to U.S. 29 (Exit 32). From the exit ramp, motorists can turn left, cross the interstate, then turn left to access the I-485 Outer Loop back to I-85 North.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
