Powell Road in Rowan County to Close for Bridge Replacement Project Wednesday, August 14, 2013

RALEIGH Weather permitting, crews will begin replacing the Powell Road bridge over Beaver Dam Branch south of Mocksville on Friday, Aug. 16. The work will require the closure of Powell Road in both directions, starting at 8 a.m. The road will remain closed until Thursday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. when the project is scheduled to be complete.

The closure will begin about 0.4 miles north of the intersection of Needmore Road and Powell Road. The N.C. Department of Transportation will set up the following detour route at that point to guide motorists around the work zone:

  • Powell Road to Chaffin Road to Needmore Road back to Powell Road.
NCDOT encourages motorists to go slow, pay attention to construction-related signs and allow plenty of time to reach their destinations safely.

This project is part of the department’s overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state’s bridges. Investments in our transportation infrastructure provide better access and support economic growth across the state.

The existing bridge was built in 1966 and has a sufficiency rating of 37 out of 100. That does not mean the bridge is unsafe. It means the bridge was not built to current design standards and needs to be replaced. The new bridge will be wider and more modern, which will improve driver safety and help traffic flow more efficiently through the area.
