CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $24.9 million contract to Crowder Construction Co. of Charlotte to construct railroad roadbed along a 12-mile segment of the North Carolina Railroad/Norfolk Southern Railroad corridor, from north of Rocky River Road in Concord to Orr Road in Charlotte. The segment is also known as “Haydock to Junker”.
This project is part of the Piedmont Improvement Program, a series of rail projects that will improve safety and mobility on the corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte. PIP projects are primarily funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and will be completed by Sept. 30, 2017.
Work can begin as early as Aug. 26, with construction scheduled to be completed by Nov. 16, 2016.
This is one of 11 contracts totaling $51.5 million awarded by NCDOT in July for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 4 percent, or $2.2 million, below NCDOT estimates.
