NCDOT will close Unaka Avenue in Mecklenburg County Wednesday Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Permanent closure is part of Independence Boulevard widening project

CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close Unaka Avenue at Sharon Amity Road at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, weather permitting. The closure is part of the $51 million widening project to convert Independence Boulevard to an expressway between Sharon Amity Road and Wallace Lane. Contractor Devere Construction started construction in April, and expects to complete the project by October 2016.

The closure is necessary for the contractor to start construction activities on a future detour for Sharon Amity Road.  Access to residences will be maintained.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
