N.C. 481 Bridge over I-95 Closed Off and On Through July 12 Wednesday, June 26, 2013

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation earlier this week closed the bridge on N.C. 481 over Interstate 95 in Halifax County to allow crews to perform routine maintenance to the bridge. The closure will remain in place until the evening of Thursday, June 27.

The bridge will reopen to traffic Thursday evening and will not close again until crews resume work on the morning of Monday, July 8. Work is scheduled to be complete and the bridge open to traffic on Friday, July 12, weather permitting.

The bridge, which was built in 1966, is classified as functionally obsolete. This does not mean that the bridge is unsafe; however, it was built to bridge design standards that are no longer used.

During the bridge closure, traffic on N.C. 481 will take the following detour routes:

•    Eastbound N.C. 481 traffic will take I-95 South to exit 150 for N.C. 33. Motorists will turn left on N.C. 33, cross over I-95 and make the first left for I-95 North back to exit 154 for N.C. 481.

•    Westbound N.C. 481 traffic will take I-95 North to exit 160 for N.C. 561. Motorists will turn left on N.C. 561, cross over I-95 and make the first left for I-95 South back to exit 154 for N.C. 481.

•    Eastbound truck traffic will take N.C. 481, turn left on Drapers Road, turn right on Ringwood Road back to N.C. 481/Glenview Road in Enfield.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
