Closure is part of Independence Boulevard widening project
CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will close Conference Drive at Independence Boulevard Monday, June 24, weather permitting. The closure is part of the $51 million widening project to convert Independence Boulevard to an expressway between Sharon Amity Road and Wallace Lane. Contractor Devere Construction started construction in April, and expect to complete the project by October 2016.
The closure is necessary for the contractor to start construction activities for the future Conference Drive interchange. The closure is scheduled to take up to a year. Motorists will not be able to access Conference Drive from Independence Boulevard, or turn from Conference Drive to Independence Boulevard.
Motorists can use Monroe Road to reach businesses on Conference Drive. Access to businesses will be maintained.
A signed detour will also be posted for pedestrians along Conference Drive and Idlewild Road.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
