NCDOT will permanently close Buick Drive in Mecklenburg County next month Thursday, May 30, 2013

Closure is part of Independence Boulevard widening project

CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close Buick Drive at Independence Boulevard Monday, June 10, weather permitting. The closure is part of the $51 million widening project to convert Independence Boulevard to an expressway between Sharon Amity Road and Wallace Lane. Contractor Devere Construction started construction last month, and expect to complete the project by October 2016.

The closure of Buick Drive is necessary for the contractor to start placing fill material for the roadbed of the future Conference Drive alignment. Access to local business will be maintained.

Citizens who use the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will be affected, as stops will be discontinued on Buick Drive and Electra Lane effective Monday, June 3. Information about schedule changes and routes can be found on the CATS website.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
