New Bridge Opens on East Center Street in Lexington Tuesday, May 21, 2013

RALEIGH — Motorists can once again travel on East Center Street over Abbott's Creek in Lexington now that a new bridge is open at that location. The bridge opened this morning, a day earlier than expected. The route is popular with motorists headed to Lexington from I-85 and had been closed since the bridge replacement project began in August.

This project is part of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s $450 million state-funded bridge plan for 2011-13, which calls for preservation, repairs or replacement of bridges statewide. The $1.9 million contract was awarded last year to Apple Tuck & Associates Inc. The old bridge, built in 1951, was considered functionally obsolete, and needed to be replaced to better meet current and future traffic demands.

The new bridge features wider lanes and shoulders, and will accommodate all traffic, including trucks and emergency vehicles, as they will not be subject to the load restrictions of the old bridge.

The old steel-construction bridge was replaced with a precast box beam bridge.  Because it was constructed with concrete and has fewer components that require regular maintenance, this type of installation significantly reduced construction costs and will reduce future maintenance costs of this bridge.

"This bridge will improve safety, extend the life of our transportation system, and make it easier for people to get where they need to go," said Davidson County Resident Engineer Dale Swicegood. "It’s also an example of how the department is working to make the best possible use of current and future resources."
