NCDOT Awards $564,676 Contract to Replace Bridge on Boyd Road in Rockingham County Friday, May 10, 2013

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a $564,676 contract to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy to replace the Boyd Road bridge over a tributary of Troublesome Creek near Monroeton in Rockingham County.

Work can begin as early as May 27, with completion scheduled for no later than Sept. 1. Once the bridge is open, the contractor will continue landscaping and vegetation work until Feb. 28, 2014.

Motorists will be directed to use Iron Works Road to Miller Chapel Road to Sandy Cross Road to Boyd Road as the detour route.

The bridge was built in the 1958 and is considered functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.

This is one of 15 contracts totaling $67.6 million awarded by NCDOT in April for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 4.1 percent, or $2.9 million, below NCDOT estimates.
