Bridge Replacement Project to Close Lanes on U.S. 29/U.S.70/I-85 Business in Guilford County Monday, April 29, 2013

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will close lanes on U.S. 29/U.S.70/I-85 Business in Guilford County to install median bridge piers as part of the project to replace the overpass bridge on Surrett Drive.  The new bridge is being constructed adjacent to the existing bridge and is expected to be open to traffic by Nov. 1.

Crews will close the left lane in each direction of U.S. 29/U.S.70/I-85 Business beginning at 9 p.m. on Monday, April 29, weather permitting, to install the bridge piers.  Both lanes will remain closed through Friday, May 24.

This project is part of the NCDOT’s $450 million state-funded bridge plan for 2011-13, which calls for preservation, repairs or replacement of bridges statewide.  The $3.6 million contract was awarded to Yates Construction Company Inc. of Stokesdale in August 2012.

The existing bridge was built in 1953 and is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.
