NCDOT to Close Whetstone Creek Road in Rockingham County for Bridge Replacement Friday, April 19, 2013

RALEIGH —The N.C. Department of Transportation will close Whetstone Creek Road between Godsey Farm Road and Irving Road in Rockingham County to replace the bridge over Whetstone Creek. Work will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 22, and is expected to be complete by Monday, July 15, weather permitting.

Motorists should use the following signed detour route during the closure:
  • Whetstone Creek Road to Godsey Farm Road to Bent Farm Road back to Whetstone Creek Road.
This project is part of the NCDOT’s $450 million state-funded bridge plan for 2011-13, which calls for preservation, repairs or replacement of bridges statewide.

The existing bridge was built in 1961 and is reaching the end of its life cycle. This means the bridge is safe, but it needs to be replaced to meet current and future traffic demands.
