NCDOT Awards $1.8 Million for Bridge Preservation Projects in Haywood, Henderson and Polk Counties Thursday, April 18, 2013

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $1.8 million contract to Astron General Contracting Co. Inc. of Jacksonville for preservation work on one bridge in Haywood County, six bridges in Henderson County and three bridges in Polk County.

The work will include repairing concrete and steel components of the bridges, replacing the bearings, and cleaning and painting the steel bridge components.

Work on each bridge can begin as early as May 15 and must be completed within 135 days of the start date.

The bridges to be preserved include:

Haywood County

  • U.S. 74 over I-40 near Clyde

Henderson County

  • U.S. 64 over I-26/U.S. 74 near Hendersonville
  • I-26/U.S. 74 West over Southern Railroad  near Fletcher
  • I-26/U.S. 74 East over Southern Railroad  near Fletcher
  • Both bridges on I-26/U.S. 74 over Cane Creek near Fletcher
  • I-26/U.S. 74 East over Macedonia Road north of Saluda

Polk County

  • N.C. 108 over I-26 in Columbus
  • I-26 West over Holbert Cove Road near Saluda
  • I-26 East over Holbert Cove Road near Saluda

This is one of 27 contracts totaling $106.9 million awarded by NCDOT in March for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 5.3 percent, or $5.9 million, below NCDOT estimates.
