Demolition Work to Start Wednesday on U.S. 64 Bridge in Lexington Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Requires I-85 Business to close in both directions for four days

RALEIGH – Crews will begin demolishing the existing U.S. 64 bridge over I-85 Business in Lexington this week to make way for a new, more modern bridge. Work will start on Wednesday, March 20, at 10 p.m. and end by Sunday, March 24, at 6 a.m., weather permitting.

To ensure motorist safety during the demolition process, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close I-85 Business in both directions at the interchange. Crews will set up the following detour routes to help drivers travel around the work zone efficiently:

·         Traveling on I-85 Business South: Take the U.S. 64 West exit and turn left onto
U.S. 52 South. Follow U.S. 52 South to back I-85 Business South; and

·         Traveling on I-85 Business North: Take the National Boulevard exit. Turn left onto Burler Street, turn left onto West Center Street and turn right onto I-85 Business North.

NCDOT is replacing the existing bridge with a new bridge built to modern design standards, which will improve safety and allow traffic to flow more efficiently through the area. The $5.9 million project is scheduled to be complete this fall.
