Bridge Project Set to Start on March 18 Will Close Section of Grasshopper Road in Southeast Wake County Thursday, March 14, 2013

RALEIGH — An N.C. Department of Transportation project to replace a bridge on Grasshopper Road in southeast Wake County is scheduled to begin on March 18, weather permitting.

A $466,169 contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson to replace the 55-year-old bridge over Poplar Creek. The bridge is considered structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Although still safe, it is in deteriorating condition and was built to bridge design standards that are no longer used.

Grasshopper Road will be closed in the area until the new bridge is ready for traffic by July 1. Additional planting and vegetation work may take until the end of the year to complete.

A signed detour will be in place during construction. Motorists coming from Smithfield Road will take Poole Road to Bethlehem Road back to Grasshopper Road. Drivers on Bethlehem will be sent to Poole Road, then Smithfield Road.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. Updated travel information is also available by calling 511 or online at www.ncdot.gov/travel. In addition, NCDOT now offers travel information on Twitter.
