NCDOT Awards $1.3 Million Contract for Bridge Preservation in Guilford County Tuesday, March 12, 2013

RALEIGHN.C. Department of Transportation Secretary Tony Tata has awarded a $1.3 million contract to Astron General Contracting Company Inc. of Jacksonville to clean and paint six bridges on U.S. 220 and Wendover Avenue in Guilford County.
The contract includes the U.S. 220 bridges over Yanceyville Street, Elm Street and the Southern Railroad and the Wendover Avenue bridges over Holden Road, West Market Street and Friendly Avenue. The work can start as early as April 16 and must be complete within 120 days after the start date.

The bridges will be cleaned and the I-beams will be painted with epoxy paint. This is the second phase of the preservation work on these bridges. The first phase was completed in November 2012 and involved resurfacing the bridge decks with latex-modified concrete to preserve the bridge decks and extend the lifespan of the bridges.
This is one of 18 contracts totaling $102 million awarded by NCDOT in February for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 0.6 percent, or $638,695, below NCDOT estimates.
