RALEIGH — Experience in a chosen field is an important thing to have when looking for a job; however, getting that initial experience in the first place can be challenging. For college graduates, the N.C. Department of Transportation Public Transportation Division’s Apprenticeship Program offers the real-world experience necessary to pursue a career in the field of public transportation. Applications are currently being accepted through March 1.
“The NCDOT Apprenticeship Program provided me with a platform to enhance conceptual thinking, transit knowledge and total system management,” said former Triangle Transit apprentice Ken Baker. “Through learning the framework of how a transit system operates, I received invaluable experience unmatched by coursework academia.”
The Public Transportation Apprenticeship Program gives current college seniors the opportunity to work in the field of public transportation management upon receiving their undergraduate degree. The 12-month program, which starts in June, provides exposure to all aspects of a transit system and allows apprentices to gain experience in managing public transportation operations. To be eligible, applicants must plan to graduate prior to the start of their apprenticeship.
Seven paid apprenticeships are available at the following locations:
• Charlotte Area Transit System (3);
• Greensboro Transit Authority (1);
• Durham Area Transit Authority (1);
• Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (1) and
• Triangle Transit (1).
To apply for one of the apprenticeships, interested applicants must complete a State of North Carolina Employment Application, as well as other required documents, which can be found on the NCDOT Public Transportation Division business partner website under the “Apprenticeships and Internships” heading.
The NCDOT Public Transportation Division awards grant funds to local public transportation systems. These grants enable systems to provide people in all 100 counties access to education, job opportunities and health care.
