Jarvisburg Students Receive Honors For 2013 N.C. Aviation Art Contest Entries Friday, February 15, 2013

Now eligible for national, international recognition

RALEIGH – An elementary school student from Jarvisburg Elementary School was among the top finishers in her category in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation’s 2013 North Carolina Aviation Art Contest.

Michelle Mixon, 10, of Jarvisburg Elementary School, finished third in the Intermediate category for students ages 10-13 with her painting of a blimp flying over a city. Kaeleigh Difloure, 9, from Moyock Elementary School received an honorable mention in the Intermediate category with her drawing of a group of hot air balloons.

Mixon’s entry is among seven that will represent North Carolina in the national contest, sponsored by Embry-Riddle Aeronautic University of Prescott, Ariz., the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Coalition for Aviation and Space Education. The national winners will advance to the international competition sponsored by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, which was established in 1905 to promote air sports. 

The top finishers advancing to the nationals in each category, with their ages and schools, are:

  3. Slade Keaton, 6, Sharon Elementary School, Statesville

  2. Alexandra Zubrowicz, 11, Wallace Elementary School, Wallace
  3. Michelle Mixon, 10, Jarvisburg Elementary School, Jarvisburg
  4. Kaeleigh Difloure, 9, Moyock Elementary School, Moyock


  1. Muhammad Ibrahim, 14, Zebulon GT Magnet Middle School, Zebulon

This year’s theme was "My Favorite Air Sport," which included activities such as Aerobatics, flying model aircraft, experimental aircraft, ballooning, general aviation, gliding, hang gliding and paragliding, and parachuting. Judges looked for originality, adherence to the theme and overall aesthetics.
