|NCDOT to Temporarily Close Bridge on N.C. 33 over Norfolk Southern Railway in Beaufort County

RALEIGH — Beginning Monday, Feb. 18 the North Carolina Department of Transportation will close the bridge on N.C. 33 over the Norfolk Southern Railway in Chocowinity until Oct. 31.
During the closure, crews will replace the existing bridge which was built in 1935 and is deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. This does not mean the bridge is unsafe, but there are elements of the bridge that needed to be monitored to maintain its structural integrity.
Motorists traveling east on N.C. 33 towards Chocowinity should use the following signed detour:
Motorists traveling east on N.C. 33 towards Aurora should use the following signed detour:
- N.C. 33 to Taylor Road to Fredrick Road to U.S. 17 South to U.S. 17 North to U.S. 17 Business back to NC 33.
Motorists traveling west on N.C. 33 should use the following signed detour:
- N.C. 33 to Taylor Road to Fredrick Road to U.S. 17 South to U.S. 17 North to Exit 176 back to NC 33.
The $4.2 million contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Company of Tarboro in March 2012 and is expected to be completed April 12, 2014.
