RALEIGH — Whether they are planning roads, designing new rail lines, building bridges or synchronizing traffic signals, engineers at the N.C. Department of Transportation play an important role in the everyday lives of people who use our state’s transportation network.
According to the National Science Foundation, in 2010, only 18.4 percent of bachelor’s degrees in engineering were awarded to women. As part of a continued nationwide effort to increase interest in the engineering field, NCDOT will be hosting several “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” workshops throughout the state starting Feb. 12 for high school junior and senior girls interested in science and math.
“I like being an engineer because it allows me to use technical skills with people skills,” said NCDOT Project Development and Environmental Analysis Staff Engineer Missy Pair. “I would want any young woman with a math and science aptitude who enjoys problem solving, working with people, and seeing concrete results (pun intended) to consider engineering as a career.”
Girls who attend one of the four workshops will be able to talk with female NCDOT engineers about the field and their experiences, as well as learn tips and tricks for succeeding in an engineering program in college. Students will also get a chance to try out engineering first-hand by participating in a hands-on transportation-related engineering activity.
The schedule for the upcoming series of workshops is as follows:
Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Metrolina Regional Transportation Management Center
2327 Tipton Drive
