CHARLOTTE – The N.C. Department of Transportation is continuing preparations to widen 9.2 miles of I-485 in south Charlotte in planning lane and shoulder closures on several roads in south Charlotte beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, weather permitting.

For the next two weeks, crews will be drilling along sections of Westinghouse Boulevard, Johnston Road and I-485. This preliminary work will help with designing foundations for future bridges associated with the project.

Lane Construction was awarded the $83.3 million project in October to add an additional lane in both directions between I-77 and Rea Road. The project includes a flyover bridge to take traffic from Johnston Road northbound to the I-485 Inner Loop, and an auxiliary lane on the Inner Loop from Johnston Road to N.C. 51.

The contractor has proposed completing the project in December 2014.
