Triangle Expressway 5K Trot III A Success Tuesday, December 04, 2012

RALEIGH —The Family Fun Day and Triangle Expressway 5K Trot II was a huge success on Sunday, Dec. 2 as 332 runners raised more than $11,000 to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The N.C. Turnpike Authority hosted the event to celebrate the upcoming opening of the third phase of the Expressway.
An addition to the event this year was a family fun bike ride. Seventy five participants rode their bikes and raised $375 for NC Department of Transportation’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Helmet Initiative, which provides free helmets to underprivileged children.

Phase I of the Triangle Expressway opened to traffic on Dec. 8, 2011 and Phase II, from N.C. 55 to U.S. 64, opened August 1. The remaining section, Phase III, from U.S. 64 to the N.C. 55 Bypass will open by January 2, 2013.

Tolls on the Expressway will be collected electronically, eliminating the need for toll booths. Overhead high-speed cameras will capture the license plate information of drivers without transponders and bill them by mail. Customers may also purchase an electronic sticker transponder, called NC Quick Pass, for $5 to begin saving up to 35 percent on tolls. About 47,000 transponders have been sold to date, well exceeding expectations.

The NC Quick Pass transponders are available online at or at the NC Quick Pass Customer Service Center at 200 Sorrell Grove Church Road, Suite A in Morrisville.
