NCDOT to Open Outside Lane of New U.S. 52 South Bridge over Liberty Street in Winston-Salem Saturday Friday, November 16, 2012

New bridge will improve safety, help traffic flow more efficiently in heavily traveled area

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation will open the outside lane of the new U.S. 52 South bridge over Liberty Street in Winston-Salem on Saturday, Nov. 17, during the afternoon hours. With the inside lane already open to traffic, this will mark the first time motorists can drive across the new bridge on both travel lanes.

NCDOT originally projected it would open the outside lane next week, but due to diligent work and favorable weather, the department is able to open the outside lane several days ahead of schedule. The early opening will help accommodate the increased number of vehicles on the highway during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The new bridge replaces a 48-year-old bridge that was not built to modern design standards and no longer meets the needs of the more than 80,000 vehicles that travel across it each day. The new bridge will offer a safer, longer lasting way for traffic to cross Liberty Street.

The department encourages motorists to “know before you go” about traffic conditions on U.S. 52. For real-time travel information at any time, call 511, visit or follow NCDOT on Twitter at
