Temporary Bridge in Place on Harkers Island; Weight limit increased to 25 tons Friday, October 12, 2012

RALEIGH — A temporary bridge is now in place on Harkers Island and the weight limit posting for it has been increased to 25 tons, allowing larger vehicles such as school buses and delivery trucks access to the island.

On Oct. 4, the weight posting on the overflow bridge over the Straits on Island Road in Carteret County was reduced to five tons after crews doing maintenance on the bridge identified portions of the structure that were in need of immediate repair. This is the only bridge leading onto Harkers Island.

N.C. Department of Transportation Bridge Maintenance crews, along with the help of multiple county maintenance workers, spent the past week putting a temporary bridge in place, and this morning were able to complete the installation of eight temporary bridge sections and install temporary guardrails on the structure. A new posting sign and message board announcing the increased weight limit have been put in place.

The bridge will continue to remain in the one-lane traffic pattern that is already in place.
