staging area on Free Nancy Road behind the Waffle House on U.S. 21 in
Statesville off Exit 151 of I-40.
FHWA Administrator Mendez and N.C. Secretary
of Transportation Conti will tour the $89.1 million I-40/77 interchange
improvement project in Statesville, and then be available to answer questions.
The interchange was built in the
late 1960s to handle a projected maximum of 5,000 vehicles per day. Today, the
interchange sees more than 70,000 vehicles per day and traffic is projected to
grow to 110,000 vehicles per day in the next 20 years.
The project is underway and is
scheduled to be completed by March 14, 2017. There are several phases of the
project on and around the interchange area, including construction of a new
multi-level interchange, widening I-40 to six lanes, widening I-77 north and
south of I-40 to accommodate the new ramps, and reconstructing U.S. 21 with a
diverging diamond interchange at I-40.
